Rumor: MS confirms Xbox 360 Slim at Delhi event

posted by malloc
Numerous India based gaming websites are reporting that MS revealed loads of new information at an event in Delhi. The real star of the show was that they reportedly announced that the Xbox 360 Slim will be available sometime in 2009 and we can look forward to an Official announcement this December.

quote:

XBOX SLIM

MS execs here confirmed that the Xbox 360 Slim exists and you can expect an official announcement on the console in December. When the redesign will be officially available (in 2009) to consumers is uncertain but this certainly looks to be a worthy purchase to start the New Year, especially with the upcoming October releases of Fallout 3, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 in India.
FALLOUT 3, FABLE 2 and GEARS OF WAR 2 EARLY TO INDIA

Speaking of the upcoming AAA trio, Indian gamers will be able to test-drive some playable builds of these titles — and that too, a good one week before their official worldwide launches. Yes, we’ll be battling the Skorge, abandoning our pets and touring nuclear wastelands before our compatriots around the world, in what is essentially a repeat of the Indian gaming section playing Halo 3 before it released worldwide.
XBOX 360, 20 GB HDD, Wireless Controller AND 2 GAMES PACKAGE for RS 14,999 ($ 333)

Microsoft also officially announced its new Xbox 360 package deal for India. Get this: An Xbox 360 Core console, a 20 GB HDD, one wireless controller and free copies of Viva Pinata and Forza 2 for Rs. 14,999.

Personally, I think Microsoft can not only further reach out to the average Indian gamers but also introduce them to more nuanced experiences like the original Gears, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and Ninja Gaiden II via titles that are fun and have mainstream appeal.

Revealed: Ensembles Studios were developing Halo MMO

posted by malloc
It has been revealed that a now cancelled Halo MMO was in development at Ensemble Studios. Unfortunately, this title will not see the light of the day as MS pulled the plug on them after the completion of Halo Wars.

Following the recent announcement that Microsoft-owned Age Of Empires creator Ensemble Studios would close after the completion of Halo Wars, Gamasutra has discovered that a now-canceled Halo MMO was in development at the studio, unearthing prototype UI and level screenshots of the Ensemble-developed project.

The prototype art, which was at one point made available on an Ensemble-linked online artist portfolio website, further confirms previous rumors that the studio was working on an MMO based on the Bungie-created sci-fi franchise.

New Fable 2 Screenshots and Brief Impressions

by Nick Breckon

The soothing British voice floating in over my shoulder scared me out of my mind.
"Oh, you missed such an opportunity there."
I had been playing Fable II for hours, headphones clamped around my skull like horse blinders. How long had he been watching? Had he always been there, on my shoulder, whispering in my ear, trying to guide me?
"If you hadn't married her, you could have taken her back to the ghost and killed her in front of him."
"I thought I'd try playing it good for a change," I explained to the evil Peter "Jiminy" Molyneux.
"Ah, but is that really good?"
He had a point. She had broken off her wedding with the deceased, ruining his life, sending him to an early grave. Why should she get a happy ending?
But I didn't have much time to consider these moral quandaries, as many as there are in Lionhead's RPG sequel. Series creator Molyneux had given us an open-ended three hours to delve into the game, so I chose the speed-run approach, blasting through as much content as possible.
Of course, as it turns out, Fable II starts slowly. Your childish appearance is matched by the basic tasks you are given--talk to this person, find these pieces of paper, repeat.
The opening would be a disappointing bore if not for the beauty of the environment. Fable II feels much more like a fairy tale than Fable ever did. It's also much more British, a welcome source of real-world, grounded inspiration for a fantasy game. Watching the snow blanket the Renaissance-era cityscape, I felt transported, rather than alienated.
Despite the dull nature of the introduction gameplay, it's all over quickly enough. After a major plot point, which I am not at liberty to spoil, the game fast-forwards your character to young adulthood. I spent the rest of my time in this phase of development: running quests, exploring the world, and leveling up my young adventurer.
Rather than a back-to-basics overhaul, Fable II seems a more iterative approach. This is a Fable game, but polished and fleshed out in a way that the first was not. In addition to the main storyline, there are a multitude of features to keep players busy, including job minigames, side quests, random encounters, marriage dilemmas, and a canine companion to keep watch over.
Marriage, property management and the dog were the highlights of the sideshow attractions. The dog is probably one of the more charming AI sidekicks put into a game--just watching his tongue loll out of his mouth was a compelling effect. Marriage also seemed an entertaining affair; at one point I received a notice from my wife calling me back home, her status update reading, "Wants sex."
The jobs are probably the weakest of these distractions. Gigs such as blacksmithing and woodcutting present the player with identical minigames, a timing-based task that is repeated over and over. Though these games weren't ever frustrating, I can't imagine spending time to master them over mastering a new spell.
On the plus side, beating up those monsters is a fun time. Each face button is mapped to a different type of attack--X is melee, Y is ranged, and B is magic. It's a simple approach, but is made more complicated by the leveling of skills across all three branches. Even with basic sword combat, the animations are context-sensitive, leading to monsters being thrown off of bridges or dispatched with a slow-motion flourish.
Much has been made of Fable II's breadcrumb trail, a system designed to eliminate the necessity of a mini-map. The game instead lays a golden trail at your feet, which leads you toward your next quest. In my experience, this mechanic worked quite well--if the trail faded, I simply had to stand still for a short momen, the crumbs reappearing about as fast as it would take to glance at a minimap.
The result of this is a much cleaner screen through which to view the world of Albion. And as a world, Albion is now idyllic to an extreme. Walking through a forest, sun beams blasting through the leaves, a lilting oboe and harp-heavy score, I frequently forgot what I was actually doing. I found myself pausing frequently to explore the detailed landscape and take it all in.
Nothing about my time with Fable II set off any alarms. Just the opposite, it finally had me getting excited about playing the completed version. From an RPG standpoint, the early moments present a more focused, better-paced adventure than found in the original Fable. From a Molyneux perspective, the game's various features seem more complete and entertaining--if still mostly optional.

Fable II is set for an October 21 release on Xbox 360.

Force Unleashed Dev: Not feasible on PC, pushing PS3 and 360 to the limits

Cameron Suey, producer of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of upcoming Star Wars game The Force Unleashed has revealed that he understands concerns that the game isn't coming to PC but tried to offer an explanation. Suey stated that it really wasn't feasible to bring the game to the PC as it would take a VERY POWERFUL PC to pull off the physics and it is DEFINITELY stretching the Xbox and PS3 to the limits.

quote:

He said: "Wow. OK that's interesting. Obviously the reason I'm doing this and the reason I think any of us is doing this is because we love games and we want to make games for people who love games. So any time someone's not happy with something, I won't say it's difficult because you have to deal with it, but we would totally prefer everybody to be as happy as possible, you know we want to make everybody as happy as possible.

"In this case, it just really wasn't feasible. As much as I really understand everybody's concerns and I really understand that people want to play the game on their platform of choice, the truth of it is, the way this game is designed, based around these physics, that are simulation based and very procedural, it would take a very powerful PC to pull them off. This is definitely stretching the Xbox and the PS3 really to the farthest they can go.

"And yet high-end PCs definitely would be able to do it. Traditionally the way you get a game on multiple PCs is you have to scale the graphics down, right? Unfortunately physics, especially procedural physics, it's impossible to scale it and if you did scale it or turn it off or turn it down it would fundamentally change the way the gameplay works. It would just be too limited for us. It was a difficult decision to make but you can't scale the physics."

Microsoft fires game tester who revealed Xbox 360 defects information

A short while ago, you may well remember reading an article by Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat in which he revealed loads of insider information regarding the Xbox 360 defects. Some of the information included that MS knew all about the defects from the start of production but didn't want to delay the launch and initially 68 percent of Xbox 360's were defective. Now Microsoft has gone and FIRED contract worker Robert Delware who revealed insider information which contributed to the Xbox 360 defect exposure story by Takahashi. MS out rightly told Delaware that he has been fired due to the article and he is now expecting civil charges but he doesn't seem worried, commenting "I don't regret it, I'll fight it, if they want to come after me, bring it on."

quote:

Robert Delaware was the only named Microsoft worker (a contract employee) who talked — without permission — to VentureBeat for our story last week on the Xbox 360 defects.

Microsoft had him fired on Wednesday. Delaware worked as a game tester at Microsoft but was employed by the temp agency Excell Data. He reported directly to a Microsoft manager, who told him he was being let go because of the VentureBeat article.

Delaware, a 29-year-old Seattle resident, expects to face civil charges from his former employer VMC (which tests games for Microsoft) and Microsoft as well. He will likely have to hire a lawyer. Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said the company does not talk about personnel issues.

“I don’t regret it,” he said in a phone call on Thursday. “I’ll fight it. If they want to come after me, bring it on.”

Delaware bravely decided to come forward and talk on the record for our story about the many problems associated with the launch of the Xbox 360. He talked to me about how he learned about problems with the hardware while working as a game tester for VMC. He worked there from 2005 to the fall of 2007. He left to join a start-up, Whrrl, and then returned to the game testing job at Excell, working for Microsoft, this summer. During his time at VMC, he saw how Xbox Live updates embedded in retail games could turn working consoles into worthless hulks. I found his remarks to be refreshing and candid.

Microsoft shows how the games played slot looks in new Xbox Experience

As part of a series in which Microsoft will try to explain to gamers some of how the new Xbox Experience will work, Gamerscore blog has today kicked this off by showing us how the Games played slot will look within the new Xbox Experience.

Here's what they had to say...

quote:

It will become obvious for the next few Wednesdays that my team is Gamerscore obsessed. Let's be honest, with high Achievement counts, it was sometimes a pain having to scroll through all of them to see how well we were doing. Once the New Xbox Experience launches that will all change.

When you click on your Gamercard in the New Xbox Experience you will see some familiar options; your messages will be accessible, you will be able to edit your profile or update your Avatar, manage your account, switch profiles (if you have multiple profiles) and change the Theme (more on Themes in the coming weeks). From here you will also be able to see every game you’ve played on your Xbox 360.

Check out the screen shot up there (click it for different sizes). The team has created a mock account for Major Nelson (Yes, we know the Gamerscores don’t match up on his account but that is because we created this screen shot on a build that is still being worked on).

The first card shows all of the Achievements you’ve unlocked and lists out your overall Gamerscore and the highest possible Gamerscore you could have based on the games you’ve played. To the right of that every game you’ve played will have its own card that fans out. If you’ve played 3 games (like this account has), you will have 3 cards. 500 games? All 500 will fan out on your screen. You can check out what Achievements you’ve unlocked per game and what you have left to work on.

We’ll have more updates like this until we launch this fall so make sure you keep checking back for the next set of screens and details.

Dead Space Producer on Censorship, EA

by Blake Ellison
Glen Schofield, executive producer of EA Redwood Shores' sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space, added to the speculation circling around the game's possible ban in three countries.

In an interview with IGN Australia, he confirmed that the extra-gory title has been banned in Japan, but for now it's of no concern. "No cuts. We're not softening it for anybody. I think a part of it was, he's not a killer. He's killing aliens and that's why we thought for a while we'd get it through in Germany. And they were like, 'Well, the fact that he can get dismembered pretty grotesquely is bad, so...'"

Schofield also had a lot to say about Electronic Arts, the game's publisher: "At one point, one of EA's marketing guys said, 'Hey - let's get a big actor to play Isaac' because that's what EA would do."

Going against the grain seems to have been his justification for the game's now-famous violence. "Right from the beginning, I wanted to do what EA wouldn't do. So let's push the violence, let's push the gore, let's push the innovation."

The game was known to have contributions from comic book writer Warren Ellis, but it turns out those contributions may have largely fallen through the cracks. "So, ah, with all due respect to Warren..." Schofield began.

"He hit deadlines for us, he did everything right - but he came on two and a half years ago and some of the ideas filter out. He also introduced us to Anthony Johnson, who became our writer for the comic series. Then Anthony eventually wrote most of the dialogue for the game."

In countries where it's available, Dead Space releases on October 14 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and October 20 for PC.

Midway executes full Mortal Kombat vs. DC roster

Posted By Polybren 75
The Mortal Kombat series has always carried an air of mystery, dating back to the first game's novel addition of Reptile, a secret character who could be faced only under very specific conditions. That air has been thicker than usual with the newest installment of the game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Beyond the issue of how Midway will land a Superman-friendly T-for-Teen rating without watering down the series' trademark fatalities, there's also been the question of which heroes and villains will be in the game. The publisher answered that question today by revealing the final characters of the full Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe cast.

Rounding out the list for DC will be the despicable duo of the evil genius Lex Luthor and the cosmic tyrant Darkseid, as well as the mercenary antihero Deathstroke. The final additions to the Mortal Kombat half of the game's 22-character roster all date back to the first two games of the series, with original Kombatant Kano joined by the sequel's supreme ruler Shao Kahn and the bladed beast Baraka.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is set for a November release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The full roster of characters appears below:

DC Universe:
Batman
Superman
Catwoman
Green Lantern
The Joker
Shazam/Captain Marvel
The Flash
Wonder Woman
Deathstroke
Lex Luthor
Darkseid

Mortal Kombat
Scorpion
Sub-Zero
Sonya
Jax
Shang Tsung

Capcom: We won't be making any more console exclusives

posted by malloc
Capcom has revealed that all major titles launched during the next fiscal year or after will be developed as MULTI PLATFORM games, so that means there will be no more console exclusive games. They have confirmed that Street Fighter IV will be multi platform.

quote:
Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom has sworn off the practice of making "next-generation" games exclusive to one home console like the PS3 or Xbox 360.

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's shareholder report for its fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31 of this year.

Henceforth, Capcom will develop many of its games using its internal MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."

As a result, the company "will aim to increase revenue and dramatically increase the number of users by launching, for example, Resident Evil 5 ... Street Fighter IV ... and Bionic Commando [on multiple platforms]."

10 Xbox 360 tricks Microsoft doesn't tell you

By Alec Meer
1. Connect your Xbox 360 to two screens at once

If you've got one of the component/composite dual video cables - the one that comes in the box with most 360s - you can have your console display its gamey goodness on two TVs simultaneously. The trick is to flick the cable's switch to Standard Definition but hook up the composite (yellow) cable to one screen and the component (the red, green, blue) cables to another. It won't be high-def, but it could be handy if you're staging a mini LAN party and want to set up a display for bored spectators to point their eyes at.

2. Play your own music in original Xbox games

That you can fire up your own MP3s during a 360 game is common knowledge (and re-soundtracking moody horror games with the Benny Hill theme tune never stops being funny), but it doesn't work if you're playing a title from the original Xbox. There's a way around it - start playing your album or playlist before you load the game, and it'll keep on playing once you do fire the title up. The game's own music won't be muted, however, so if you can't do that in its settings you'll go mad from the weird cacophony.

3. It can write its own blog

Ah, the internet - founded upon crazy men making crazy things for free. Such as a blog supposedly written by your 360, based on what you've been using it for. It monitors your Live account and automatically generates entries about what it's been up to that day (or what it hasn't been up to - expect many posts about neglect if you don't turn it on for a while). The tone is very much American geek, but it's a fun record of your own gaming habits, and of keeping an eye on what your chums are up to. Get set up at www.360voice.com.

4. Play Xbox 360 games online for free - without a Live account

That you have to pay a subscription for online gaming, something that's free on other consoles and on the PC, is perhaps the 360's greatest bugbear. Stage your own form of peaceful process by playing online without paying a penny. You'll need XLink Kai, a free app you run from a PC on the same network as the console that tricks the 360 into thinking the internet is a LAN. So it'll treat remote opponents as though they're in the same room as you - and you don't have to pay for local multiplayer. Clever! One snag - Microsoft have set the 360 to boot out anyone with a ping higher than 30ms, so you'll have to be selective about who you play with. Local chums are best, not your Chinese penpal.

5. Interact with your Xbox 360 music

Hit X whilst playing a music CD or file (whether from the 360's hard drive, an MP3 player you've plugged in, or streamed from a PC) and you'll enter Psychedelic Wonderland. Well, some artful visualisations, anyway. Grab a controller or two (or up to four, as it happens) and start moving thumbpads and pressing buttons to interact with the crazed shifting colours. There are actually some fairly elaborate controls - read the full manual at http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/x360manual.php. Good at parties, this.

6. Connect your Xbox 360 to a wireless network without an official adaptor

The good news is you don't have to drop £50 on Microsoft's offensively overpriced Wi-Fi adaptor. The bad news is you'll need a laptop with wifi to do it. Head to Control Panel - Network Connections (In Windows XP) or Network & Sharing Center - Manage Network Connections (in Vista). Select the Local Area Connection and the Wireless Network Connection at once, then right-click and hit 'bridge connections'. Disconnect then reconnect to your wireless network, run a network cable from the laptop's Ethernet port to the 360's, and you should be good to go. Unfortunately, you may have to remove the bridge (repeat the above process and you'll see the option) whenever you want to browse the net with the laptop.

7. Play music from your iPod

Not a secret as such, but Microsoft doesn't exactly shout about the fact it plays nice with a device made by uber-rival Apple. Hidden in the depths of the Marketplace, you'll find a teeny download called 'optional iPod support'. Once you've grabbed that, plug in your iPod (iPhones aren't supported yet, sadly) and head to the Media Blade. You'll see your pod appear there, and can now browse its music by album, artist, genre or whatever. It'll also charge via the USB port, usefully.

8. Reset your Xbox 360 video settings

Remember this one if you're in the habit of carrying your console to chum's houses and hooking it up to different displays. It can end up trying to output the wrong signal, so you can't see anything or get a flickering screen. Fortunately there's a fairly simple fix if this happens. Remove any discs from the tray and turn the thing off. Then turn it on using a gamepad. As it boots hold down the Y button, then hit and hold the right trigger. The video settings will reset to default, and you'll stop your sobbing.

9. Play any media file, plus online videos on your Xbox 360

Free app Tversity neatly sidesteps the pointless video/audio restrictions Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo alike slap on their consoles, making them able to play any format. Again, you'll need a PC on the same network, but it's a simple matter of installing the program and having it scan the folders you keep your media in. It'll replace the standard network file-sharing system Windows uses, but behaves pretty much the same way at the 360's end. As well as that, it'll convert unsupported files on the fly - though you'll need a pretty beefy PC to do this with large video files, otherwise you'll be waiting ages. You can also add online video URLs on the PC's end - including Youtube - and then access those from the console.

10. Use any HDMI cable and still get digital surround sound

Though the newer 360s have an HDMI output for optimal video quality, they've built the ports in such a way that you can't have the standard component/composite video cable, with its crucial optical audio output, plugged in at the same time as HDMI. Instead, you're supposed to drop a frightening amount of money on the official HDMI cable with audio adapter. Balls to that. See the big plastic box at the end of the standard video cable that connects to the console? Wedge a knife or screwdriver into the join and twist to pop it off. The result looks messy, but is small enough to plug in alongside a standard, cheapo HDMI cable.

RACE Pro is exclusive to Xbox 360 as the developers didn't have a budget for PS3

posted by malloc at 12:25 pm on 2008-09-11
SimBin boss Henrik Roos has revealed that RACE PRO is exclusive to the Xbox 360 as they had to finance the production of the game alone and the company simply did not have the budget for a PS3 version. He also added that it can be interesting to be exclusive to one platform although failed to elaborate further on this.
quote:
SimBin boss Henrik Roos has said that developing exclusively for one console “could be interesting,” when referring to SimBin’s decision to make RACE Pro exclusive to the Xbox 360.

When asked by our sister publication, 360 Gamer magazine, why SimBin had decided to make the game a 360 exclusive, Roos admitted that financial matters had played a part in the decision – but added that it could also have possible benefits as well.

“SimBin has financed this production our self and we simply did not have the budget to do a PS3 [version],” Roos said.

Looking on the bright side though, he added that “it could also be interesting to be exclusive on one platform, if the support from the platform holder is good.”

Unfortunately, Roos didn’t elaborate on what exactly was meant by this. Although it is worth remembering that many third party developed exclusives have used their exclusivity as an effective marketing tool in the past.

Konami snaps up rights for European champions for PES 2009

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced that it has reached
agreement to feature Manchester United in its forthcoming PES 2009 title. The current English and European Champions will appear fully licensed in all versions of the eagerly-awaited football title, which will be released for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PSP® (PLAYSTATION®PORTABLE), and PlayStation®2, in the Autumn. A Wii version is scheduled for release in Spring 2009.

PES 2009 is the latest installment of the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, and features a wide array of extensive new additions that will enhance the series’ reputation as the most realistic football game available. In addition to all new control elements, and player AI routines that elevate its gameplay to new levels, PES 2009 also enjoys a stunning graphical update. Its players look identical to their real-life counterparts, while new moves, and key online enhancements will further bolster the realism of the new game.

The inclusion of Manchester United within the game is another major step forward for the series’ realism. PES 2009 will feature the most detailed likenesses of the European Champions, and full use of the team’s kits and club crests. Similarly, PES 2009 also captures the unique skills of the Manchester side’s key players with the game’s recreations of Carlos Tevez, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Edwin van der Sar boasting bespoke animations to ensure they move like their real-life counterparts in addition to looking like them.

“Konami is continually striving to add key licences to the PES series, and the capture of the English game’s most successful club is another major step forward,” commented Jon Murphy, PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “The team has worked hard to recreate the skill and pace of Manchester United, and their fans will be delighted with the most realistic recreation of their squad in any video game.”

Rutter: PS3 and 360 have sufficient architecture and power to support FIFA 10 on 10

David Rutter was recently asked why it has taken FIFA SO LONG to implement the 10 on 10 online mode when it seems so logical to incorporate. Rutter responded by saying that there are a number of reasons, but now the PS3 and Xbox 360's network architecture is sufficiently mature enough to allow 20 gamers to play FIFA 09 at the same time. The PS2 and Xbox weren't powerful enough and there wasn't enough bandwidth available.

IGN: Why has it taken FIFA (and every other sports franchise) so long to implement this mode when it seems so logical?

Rutter: Many different reasons but the biggest one is that PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have network architecture that is sufficiently mature to allow 20 individuals to play a single game of FIFA 09 at the same time. PlayStation 2 and Xbox weren't powerful enough and the internet didn't have sufficient bandwidth to enable this. And we have had to do a number of technological things like re-broadcasters to enable the level of service in our mode to allow this to be a compelling experience.

[新闻]微软宣判"光环战争"开发商解散

译 名: 光环战争

原 名: HALO WARS

机 种: X360

类 型: 即时战略

开 发 商: Ensemble

发 行 商: Microsoft Game Studios
