Why SEGA stopped making consoles

News by Ellie Gibson

Long before he was the boss of EA Sports, and even before he was the boss of Xbox, Peter Moore used to be a big deal at SEGA. Now he's admitted it was he decided the company should stop making games machines and just make games instead.

Speaking to the Guardian, Moore got all misty eyed when talking about SEGA's final foray into the hardware market.

"Dreamcast was a phenomenal 18 months of pain, heartache, euphoria... We thought we had it," he said.

"But then Playstation came out... And of course, EA didn't publish which left a big hole, not only in sports but in other genres. We ended up that Christmas period not being able to get to where we needed to be - we weren't far short, we just couldn't get that critical mass."

In other words, Moore explained, SEGA Japan set a target that just couldn't be reached. "I can't remember the exact figures - but we had to make N hundreds of millions of dollars by the holiday season, and shift N millions of units of hardware, otherwise we just couldn't sustain the business.

"So on January 31st 2001 we said SEGA is leaving hardware - somehow I got to make that call, not the Japanese. I had to fire a lot of people, it was not a pleasant day."

According to Moore, there was no way the Dreamcast could compete with PS2 by this stage - so a tough decision had to be made. "SEGA had the option of pouring in more money and going bankrupt and they decided they wanted to live to fight another day," he stated. "So we licked our wounds, ate some humble pie and went to Sony and Nintendo to ask for dev kits."

Moore's philosophical about it all, however. "In the end, it didn't work out," he observed. "It was tough, but those were great days and I've never met anybody who regretted buying a Dreamcast."

EA Ends Merger Negotiations with Take-Two

After all that fuss earlier this year, EA's takeover bid of Take-Two is officially over.
By Kris Pigna,

Finally ending the on-again, off-again story that has enthralled (right?) the gaming industry all year, Electronics Arts announced today that they've officially ended merger negotiations with Take-Two. So much for Grand Theft Auto 4's supposedly sagging sales complicating the matter, huh?

"Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that while EA continues to have a high regard for Take-Two's creative teams and products, after careful consideration, including a management presentation and review of other due diligence materials provided by Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., EA has decided not to make a proposal to acquire Take-Two and has terminated discussions with Take-Two."
So reads EA's announcement, in which CEO John Riccitiello goes on to taut a number of games EA is launching later this year. This announcement was followed by a response from Take-Two, in which chairman Strauss Zelnick said his company will continue to pursue potential "strategic alternatives" with other parties.

"We remain focused on creating value for our stockholders and our consumers. This has been our goal since EA launched its conditional and unsolicited bid six months ago, a bid which was repeatedly rejected by our stockholders," Zelnick said. "As part of that commitment, we remain actively engaged in discussions with other parties in the context of our formal process to consider strategic alternatives. We're especially proud of the success we've enjoyed over the past eighteen months and we remain confident in our ability to generate value for stockholders."

This whole shindig first started back in February, when Electronic Arts proposed an estimated $2 billion offer to purchase Take-Two. Take-Two rejected this offer, stating it undervalued their company, and so it went for the rest of the year, with additional offers being subsequently refused until the companies took their negotiations behind closed doors in August. Clearly, things didn't go much more smoothly in private.

Capcom: We won't be making any more console exclusives

posted by malloc
Capcom has revealed that all major titles launched during the next fiscal year or after will be developed as MULTI PLATFORM games, so that means there will be no more console exclusive games. They have confirmed that Street Fighter IV will be multi platform.

quote:
Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom has sworn off the practice of making "next-generation" games exclusive to one home console like the PS3 or Xbox 360.

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's shareholder report for its fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31 of this year.

Henceforth, Capcom will develop many of its games using its internal MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."

As a result, the company "will aim to increase revenue and dramatically increase the number of users by launching, for example, Resident Evil 5 ... Street Fighter IV ... and Bionic Commando [on multiple platforms]."

今年LFL(Lingerie Football League,内衣橄榄球联盟)已正式成立,其前身源自NFL超级碗中场休息时穿插的预付费娱乐节目。
起初只有两支队:洛杉矶魅惑队(原名Team Dream)和纽约快活队(原名Team Euphoria)后来又有达拉斯欲望和芝加哥极乐队加入。
现在球队数目已经达到10只。

Hideo Kojima Mentions "Massive Ad Campaigns" And "Sell-Off Tactics"

The advertising campaign for Metal Gear Solid 4 was huge. The hype for that game, years in the making, was enormous. It was pushed hard before there were playable demos, and the game's creator, Hideo Kojima, raised expectations with big promise after big promise. It's curious that on the job announcement page for the Kojima Productions site, Hideo Kojima states:

The creativity of video games is now on the verge of crisis. Massive advertising campaigns are executed for games before their entertainment values are put into consideration all too often, resulting in sell-off tactics happening without hesitation.

And while Kojima and his team did deliver a first class title and while the game did provide a PS3 sales spike, the final product still hasn't sold a million copies in Japan. That might be because MGS is as popular with the home team crowd or whatever. The irony is that Konami is guilty of the hype Kojima seems so critical of.

And apparently, Japanese stores cannot return unsold product to distributors...

Apple rocks out, announces new iPods, iTunes 8

At the latest in what is becoming an annual September event for Apple, the company today announced a number of new products in time for the holiday rush. We covered the Steve Jobs' "Let's Rock" keynote live in San Francisco, and here is a roundup of the actual announcements and new products.
HD TV shows
Leading off by touting over 65 million accounts worldwide in the iTunes Store, Steve Jobs first announced the arrival of HD TV shows. Shows will cost $2.99 apiece (instead of the typical $1.99 for SD episodes), but unlike the handful of HD movies the store already has, HD TV show episodes can be watched on a computer, not just on an Apple TV. In addition, after a much-publicized breakup, NBC is also returning to the store with its most popular shows, and in HD to boot.
iTunes 8, now with more Genius
The next major announcement is iTunes 8, a major new version of Apple's media management software that governs its iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV ecosystem. Confirming "tons of new stuff" and features that were rumored over the weekend, Jobs announced a new Pandora-like "Genius" feature that can generate playlists of songs "that go great together." A new Genius Sidebar can also anonymously (and voluntarily) send your library info up to the iTunes Store cloud to make smarter recommendations of new music a customer may like. The "Genius Algorithms" that power all of this will also harness everyone's library information to fuel this new community powered music recommendation system.
A new button in the iTunes 8 interface offers easy access to these new Genius features. When you're listening to a song, for example, pressing this button will generate a new playlist based on similar music you already have in your library, as well as recommendations of music in the iTunes Store you might like. iTunes 8 should appear in Software Update for both Mac OS X and Windows users, but you can also easily grab it from iTunes.com.

New iPod nano
The first iPod-related announcement today was an actual discontinuance of the largest traditional iPod, the 160GB iPod classic. "No one buys the thick" one, Jobs said on stage. The iPod classic line will slim down to a single 120GB model for $249, which should be the same size and dimensions as the current 80GB model.

The iPod nano line got a refresh today with an entirely new version as "the thinnest iPod we've ever made." (First, hands-on review of Infinite Loop) It has an oval, tapered shape with a black wheel, and fits "beautifully" with the iPod nano's original, taller portait design. The new iPod nano can create Genius playlists on the go, without having to connect to iTunes, and it also gained the accelerometer from the iPhone and iPod touch for viewing Cover Flow album art, photos, and video when turned sideways. The iPod nano is also gaining a number of new hardware and software features that typically could only be had through third-party accessories (if at all), such as a built-in voice recorder and the ability to shake it to shuffle.
Other new iPod nano features include an iPhone-like headphone set with a new clicker, volume control, and microphone. You can double-click to skip to the next song, press once to pause, three times to go to the previous song, and record voice memos with a microphone on the other side. This set of headphones will cost $29 and arrive next month, along with a new set of higher quality in-ear headphones that will sell for $79." We think we really got it right this time," Jobs said about the new headphones.
Apple claims a "great" battery life for the iPod nano with 24 hours of music and 4 hours for video. The new iPod nano should be in stock in the next few days, if not early next week, and will cost $149 for 8GB, $199 for 16GB.
New iPod touches
Calling the iPod touch "an incredible product," Jobs bragged that even though it's "unlike anything in the marketplace... well, for the holiday season we're making it even better." The new iPod touch (first hands-on review on Infinite Loop) has the same 3.5" display but gets thinner with a tapered, stainless steel back (probably to differentiate it from the iPhone). The iPod touch will gain the iPhone's integrated volume controls on its side, and gains a built-in speaker like the iPhone which Jobs claimed was "really hard for something this thin, for casual listening." Genius playlist creation will also be built into the iPod touch.

Another unique feature of the new iPod touch is the integration of the Nike+iPod system for tracking running statistics. Unlike the iPod nano, the hardware receiver has been built into the iPod touch.
The new iPod touch is rated for an "astounding" 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video, will work with the same new clicker headphones as the nano, and is available today in sizes of 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399. Steve Jobs' and Apple's marketing tout the new iPod touch as "the funnest iPod ever." No, that isn't a typo.
New iPhone OS 2.1
The iPhone also got some time in the spotlight today with the much-anticipated announcement of iPhone OS 2.1, the software and firmware that runs both the iPhone and iPod touch. The major update should "significantly" improve battery life, problems with droppped calls, fix a lot of bugs, and backing up to iTunes should be "dramatically" faster. New iPod touches ship with the 2.1 OS update, and it should be available to download for free for all other iPhone and iPod touch owners running iPhone OS 2.0 this Friday. iPod touch owners still using 1.x will need to pay the 2.x upgrade fee of $9.99.
That's a wrap
Jobs ended the event by exclaiming that this is the "Strongest lineup of iPods we've ever had for holiday season '08." As Apple typically ends major keynotes with a performance, Jack Johnson took the stage to wrap up the event.

Forbes: Google as a videogame publisher isn't as crazy as it sounds

Many of you will already know that Google has somewhat entered the gaming sector with Google Lively, an avatar based social interaction site targeted at Second Life players and through the acquisition of in-game ad firm Adscape. While it hasn't really done much with either as of yet, Forbes are speculating that Google as a video game publisher is within the realms of possibility and not as crazy as one might think.

quote:
"Given all the employees they have and the company's policy of encouraging side projects, I would be very surprised if there wasn't somebody in Google who's not approaching [gaming] as an opportunity," Sebastian says. "Of course, there are a number of hurdles that have to be cleared before it reaches the outside world."

It is, of course, entirely possible those hurdles will never be cleared in the publishing or development fields. But last week's release of the Chrome Web browser and upcoming plans to team with Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane to distribute a series of Web-based cartoon shorts show that Google is still very much in expansion mode.

There's no question the company wants a part of the $18 billion videogame industry. The real question is: What is it planning to do to get it?

Infogrames & Namco Bandai to establish a Strategic Partnership

Press Release
Infogrames Entertainment and Namco Bandai Games Europe
to establish a Strategic Partnership

Partnership expected to provide Namco Bandai with a global distribution
network and substantially increase distribution revenues of Infogrames

Lyon, France, September 9, 2008 – Infogrames Entertainment (“Infogrames”) and Namco Bandai Games Europe S.A.S. (“Namco Bandai”) today announced that they have signed a binding letter of intent establishing a strategic partnership between Infogrames and Namco Bandai. Under the terms of the agreement, Namco Bandai would acquire a 34% stake in Infogrames’ European and Asian distribution operations, with the remaining stake being retained by Infogrames.

Under the terms of the transaction, Infogrames has agreed to regroup its distribution operations into a standalone entity with exclusive physical packaged-goods distribution rights for video games produced by Namco Bandai and Infogrames within Infogrames’ European and Asian territories. Infogrames would continue to invest in, develop and publish interactive video games in a packaged format or online as one of its core activities.
The newly formed entity will benefit from the extensive distribution network of Infogrames, with global reach and localized presence, while filling its pipeline from the entire range of products created by Namco Bandai and Infogrames, as well as other publishers. Consequently, this entity is expected to increase the revenues and profitability of Infogrames’ distribution operations by establishing distribution contracts with multiple publishers.

This transaction formalizes the close relationship between the two companies which dates back to 2001 and generates a number of key benefits:

A highly efficient network of distribution across Europe and Asia which can be leveraged to deliver the products of both Namco Bandai and Infogrames, thereby increasing revenues of the distribution company

Economies of scale in operating the distribution network generating significant cost savings

Access to Namco Bandai’s and Infogrames’ extensive product portfolio on an exclusive basis

Opportunity to establish distribution contracts with other global video game companies

David Gardner, CEO of Infogrames, said: “I am delighted that this transaction strengthens our outstanding partnership with Namco Bandai, one of the industry’s greatest creators and publishers of video games, and is a significant development in Infogrames’ reinvention. The agreement will give Infogrames a guaranteed and strengthened product portfolio and provide us additional means to invest in new product development for packaged and online markets.”

The main terms of the contemplated transaction would be the following:
The proposed enterprise value of the newly formed entity comprising the distribution operations would be €95 million on a ‘cash free, debt free’ basis, including a €15 million earn out mechanism based on the actual audited results of the newly formed entity for the fiscal year 2008/2009.
Until June 30, 2012 Infogrames will benefit from a put option to sell its remaining stake of 66% in the newly formed entity to Namco Bandai.
From June 30, 2012 to June 30, 2013, Namco Bandai will benefit from a call option over 66% of the newly formed entity held by Infogrames.
For the purposes of Namco Bandai’s call option and Infogrames’ put option, both parties have agreed that the enterprise value for 100% of the new formed entity would be in the range of €60 million and €190 million based on 7x EBIT of the entity at the time of the exercise of the option.

Formal closing of the transaction is subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions, including notably the satisfactory completion of due diligence, and is expected to take place before the end of February 2009.

Tecmo responds to Square Enix, doesn't say very much

The Tecmo/Koei/Square Enix love triangle continues as Tecmo has responded to Square Enix's letter. Squeenix was snubbed after its friendly offer to take over Tecmo was rejected, and the Ninja Gaiden publisher instead announced that it was in talks with Koei over a possible merger.
Square Enix wrote a letter asking for three clarifications from Tecmo, which can be read here. Tecmo has finally responded with this cordial but blunt set of answers:

1. "The reason why the Tecmo board members did not accept this offer is because of the decision to begin merger talks with Koei."
2. "Supposing this is the case, then the plan to merge with Koei (form of the integration, stock prices assumption, integration ratio and so forth) is concretely beneficial to Tecmo shareholders."
3. "Supposing this isn't the case, then we would disclose alternatives that would be advantageous to shareholders."

... "To answer Square Enix's proposal within the time frame of one week provided little room for negoitiation and discussion. Conversely, regarding the proposal from Koei, there is time for management to consider how to integrate and most likely arrive at ultimately raising our corporate value. This is why we have begun talks with Koei concerning corporate integration."

So there you have it. It's an understandable move for Tecmo if it would prefer to have more control. It would likely be consumed by Square Enix but Koei would see them on more equal footing. Despite what some might say about Koei, the company is a powerhouse in Japan so it's a good move even if the libraries of each company aren't particularly broad. Anyway, this should be the end of the matter, but I wouldn't be surprised if Square Enix continued to kick some rocks and get a little huffy over this.

Limited-Edition DC Super Heroes Shoes Preview Comic book-inspired kicks.

September 5, 2008 - Super hero emblazoned clothing is no strange occurrence these days, especially with the incredible box office success of comic-to-films like The Dark Knight and Spider-Man. Of the super hero wear that has been circulating retailers boutiques, footwear has typically been reserved for those still too small to ride the Ferris Wheel, but ACI International aims to change all of that.

Beginning on September 29, LimitedSoles.com will be giving adults an opportunity to treat their feet with DC Comics-licensed, limited edition kicks packed to the brim with comic book iconology.

LimitedSoles will be offering three varieties of the Nike Airforce One inspired shoes--Batman, Joker, and Superman. Each of the shoes are constructed from rich, full-grain leather and feature incredible detail, paying homage to some of the biggest names in comics.

Each shoe is individually numbered for authenticity (and bragging rights) and comes packaged in custom boxes with additional sockbeds. The pairs will be produced in a number identical to the number of years each character has been in existence. For example, there will be only 1,939 pairs of the Batman shoes because Batman first appeared in 1939. There will only be 1,940 pairs of the Joker model, and the Superman model will be the rarest coming in at 1,938 pairs.

Atari 'Industrial Design Artwork' Gallery

Check out an awesome series of old-school Atari hardware-inspired artwork. "I'm no art critic, but I know what I hate. And I don't hate this." So said Mr. Burns in an early episode of The Simpsons, and we heed his wise words now. We're not sure if these paintings inspired by Atari industrial design are great Art with a capital A, but we do know one thing: They're rad as hell either way.

The gallery comes by way of AtariGames.com, a fansite that hosted images of the artwork (of unknown origins) after acquiring them "late last year." The gallery hasn't actually been updated since 2002, though, so it's been around for quite some time -- but it's still worth checking out this explosion of 70's nostalgia all the same. Viewing these, we can't help but wonder two things: 1) How much better would the world be if all the crappy, generic paintings in doctor's and dentist's offices were replaced by Atari-inspired artwork instead? And 2) assuming these pieces were painted in Atari's heyday, why the hell didn't they ever hire the artist(s?) to design the actual cover art for Atari games instead?

What follows are a select few pieces, but be sure to check out the gallery to see them all.

Is this lady holding an avocado, while wearing a tube top that also says "Avocado"? Dude, that's weird.

Say... could some of these have been the secret inspiration for Mirror's Edge's color style?

And finally, we're pretty sure this piece is titled "Ode to a Double Entendre."

Hackers talk Xbox 360 security system and its weaknesses

Xbox 1 left on for four days, burns down a house

A report from Everything Machine states that an Xbox (we think Xbox 1 as the article then goes onto mention an Xbox 360 which burned down a house in April) which was left on for FOUR days managed to spark off a huge house fire. The machine as it was left on for so long overheated and this set a nearby spiral notebook on fire and the rest was history...

quote:

When the smoke cleared, firefighters traced the cause of the fire to a recreation room off the basement where the Xbox sat.

Investigators concluded the Xbox -- which may have been on as long as four days -- had overheated and set a nearby spiral notebook on fire.

In the days since the Aug. 25 fire, the family has faced one problem after another.

Unable to return to their apartment or continue paying the cost of a hotel, the family is now living in a trailer at an Otisville campground.

And Walter's insurance company informed her that her coverage will pay only to fix the business and won't replace personal possessions ruined by smoke.

All because of an Xbox that Walter had never given much more than a passing thought.

Finally GTA isn't blamed for a shooting but this time it is Halo

According to reports and an Official investigation, it is believed an 11 year old boy who died from a gunshot was trying to imitate scenes from the Halo video game. The boy reportedly took a gun and tried to recreate some things that had occurred in the game but with an automatic rifle it can be confusing as to whether its loaded or not and this confusion is expected to have led to his death.

quote:

“We are ruling that it is an accidental shooting,” Jefferson County Detective Sgt. Larry Lee said. “The child was getting ready for school and decided to skip school. He was playing video games and we found out he had a .22 caliber rifle that belongs to him. He had access to the rifle and a magazine was kept somewhere else by his parents. He was familiar with the rifle and had been shooting it a couple of times a month - he lived out in the country, so that was nothing unusual.”

Lee said it appeared, following the department's investigation, that after playing a combat video game called “Halo,” Nimm took the gun and tried to recreate some of the things that had occurred in the game. With an automatic rifle, Lee said there can sometimes be confusion over whether it contains a magazine or not, and this confusion likely led to Nimm's death.
