Revealed: Ensembles Studios were developing Halo MMO

posted by malloc
It has been revealed that a now cancelled Halo MMO was in development at Ensemble Studios. Unfortunately, this title will not see the light of the day as MS pulled the plug on them after the completion of Halo Wars.

Following the recent announcement that Microsoft-owned Age Of Empires creator Ensemble Studios would close after the completion of Halo Wars, Gamasutra has discovered that a now-canceled Halo MMO was in development at the studio, unearthing prototype UI and level screenshots of the Ensemble-developed project.

The prototype art, which was at one point made available on an Ensemble-linked online artist portfolio website, further confirms previous rumors that the studio was working on an MMO based on the Bungie-created sci-fi franchise.

EA Declares Thursday The "Day Of Reckoning"

By Mike Fahey
Mythic is going big with the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning launch across North America and Europe this week, readying to flood retail channels with larger shipping numbers than any other newly launched MMO in the history of newly launched MMOs. They've even given the launch day a name - Thursday, September 18th is now the "Day of Reckoning".

"Over the course of our beta, over a million gamers throughout the world sent a clear signal to us - they want WAR, and we are more than happy to oblige them,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “In three days the real battle begins – we have declared September 18th the ‘Day of Reckoning,’ and WAR will soon be upon us!”

Well I will admit that folks are excited, over a million gamers in beta just means that over a million gamers wanted to try it out before deciding to purchase it, which really makes calling Thursday the "Day of Reckoning" all the more appropriate. Will WAR be a WoW killer, or will it simply crash against the Lich King's armor and bounce right off? Oh it's on.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Deploys to Retail Stores

Mythic Entertainment Lets Loose the Armies of WAR as the “Day of Reckoning” Approaches

FAIRFAX, Va.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today announced that the highly-anticipated MMORPG, Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR), will ship tomorrow to retail stores across North America, Europe, and Oceania in preparation for launch on September 18th. WAR set a company record for the most retail pre-orders placed by consumers for a PC title in EA’s 26 year history. Overall, the company has sold 1.5 million units of WAR to retailers.

Based on the popular tabletop game from Games Workshop, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is an epic fantasy MMORPG featuring innovative Realm vs. Realm™ game play that pits the armies of Order and Destruction against one another on the battlefield to determine the fate of nations. Hundreds of thousands of players have already joined the battle in the open beta, and soon the time will be at hand for players the world over to pledge their allegiance to the armies of WAR.

“This is truly a historic day for both EA and Mythic as we prepare to send more copies of WAR to retailers than any other newly launched MMORPG in North America and Europe. Over the course of our beta, over a million gamers throughout the world sent a clear signal to us - they want WAR, and we are more than happy to oblige them,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “In three days the real battle begins – we have declared September 18th the ‘Day of Reckoning,’ and WAR will soon be upon us!”

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB and is available for PC at an MSRP of $49.99. WAR will be the first MMORPG to open its servers simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Oceania when it goes live on September 18th, 2008. Force Unleashed Dev: Not feasible on PC, pushing PS3 and 360 to the limits

Cameron Suey, producer of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of upcoming Star Wars game The Force Unleashed has revealed that he understands concerns that the game isn't coming to PC but tried to offer an explanation. Suey stated that it really wasn't feasible to bring the game to the PC as it would take a VERY POWERFUL PC to pull off the physics and it is DEFINITELY stretching the Xbox and PS3 to the limits.

quote:

He said: "Wow. OK that's interesting. Obviously the reason I'm doing this and the reason I think any of us is doing this is because we love games and we want to make games for people who love games. So any time someone's not happy with something, I won't say it's difficult because you have to deal with it, but we would totally prefer everybody to be as happy as possible, you know we want to make everybody as happy as possible.

"In this case, it just really wasn't feasible. As much as I really understand everybody's concerns and I really understand that people want to play the game on their platform of choice, the truth of it is, the way this game is designed, based around these physics, that are simulation based and very procedural, it would take a very powerful PC to pull them off. This is definitely stretching the Xbox and the PS3 really to the farthest they can go.

"And yet high-end PCs definitely would be able to do it. Traditionally the way you get a game on multiple PCs is you have to scale the graphics down, right? Unfortunately physics, especially procedural physics, it's impossible to scale it and if you did scale it or turn it off or turn it down it would fundamentally change the way the gameplay works. It would just be too limited for us. It was a difficult decision to make but you can't scale the physics."

Diablo 3 Color Controversy Revisited, See Diablo 3 Desaturated in Action

by Chris Faylor
Reigniting the "Diablo III is too colorful" controversy, DIII.Net and fan Sozou bring us a Diablo III gameplay trailer meant to show what Blizzard's anticipated PC RPG would look like, in motion, under a desaturated art style.

In Blizzard's previous judgments of darker fan renderings, Diablo III designer Jay Wilson stressed that desaturated color made it more difficult to identify on-screen objects and therefore reduced the ease of play. The author of the video below feels that he addresses these concerns while still giving the game a "darker" ambiance.

Wilson also noted that some other fan renderings sported effects that certainly looked pretty, but aren't possible in the current engine.

Steve's Take: At this point it is really just getting painful, but for all the nerds in a huff over this stuff, finally seeing the game in motion with these alleged color "improvements" was worth a look.

Diablo 2, which came out about a decade ago, actually has gamma and brightness controls within the video menus. So you can tell even back then Blizzard was dealing with color issues with the franchise. Probably more due to inconsistency in color reproduction of CRTs back then, but they were aware of it and addressed it. It really wouldn't be terribly surprising to see one or two other video options in Diablo 3.

Dead Space Producer on Censorship, EA

by Blake Ellison
Glen Schofield, executive producer of EA Redwood Shores' sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space, added to the speculation circling around the game's possible ban in three countries.

In an interview with IGN Australia, he confirmed that the extra-gory title has been banned in Japan, but for now it's of no concern. "No cuts. We're not softening it for anybody. I think a part of it was, he's not a killer. He's killing aliens and that's why we thought for a while we'd get it through in Germany. And they were like, 'Well, the fact that he can get dismembered pretty grotesquely is bad, so...'"

Schofield also had a lot to say about Electronic Arts, the game's publisher: "At one point, one of EA's marketing guys said, 'Hey - let's get a big actor to play Isaac' because that's what EA would do."

Going against the grain seems to have been his justification for the game's now-famous violence. "Right from the beginning, I wanted to do what EA wouldn't do. So let's push the violence, let's push the gore, let's push the innovation."

The game was known to have contributions from comic book writer Warren Ellis, but it turns out those contributions may have largely fallen through the cracks. "So, ah, with all due respect to Warren..." Schofield began.

"He hit deadlines for us, he did everything right - but he came on two and a half years ago and some of the ideas filter out. He also introduced us to Anthony Johnson, who became our writer for the comic series. Then Anthony eventually wrote most of the dialogue for the game."

In countries where it's available, Dead Space releases on October 14 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and October 20 for PC.

Capcom: We won't be making any more console exclusives

posted by malloc
Capcom has revealed that all major titles launched during the next fiscal year or after will be developed as MULTI PLATFORM games, so that means there will be no more console exclusive games. They have confirmed that Street Fighter IV will be multi platform.

quote:
Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom has sworn off the practice of making "next-generation" games exclusive to one home console like the PS3 or Xbox 360.

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's shareholder report for its fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31 of this year.

Henceforth, Capcom will develop many of its games using its internal MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."

As a result, the company "will aim to increase revenue and dramatically increase the number of users by launching, for example, Resident Evil 5 ... Street Fighter IV ... and Bionic Commando [on multiple platforms]."

EA: Red Alert 3 will use SecuROM, but we will be more lenient

In response to concerns over DRM, EA has told Red Alert fans that their next game in the series will use SecuROM but it will be configured to be more lenient than they've supported in the past. This includes not having to re-authenticate an installation online after the first launch, not having to play with the disc in your PC and being able to install and play on up to five computers.

quote:

Hi guys --

I’ve been hearing your concerns about the DRM situation and wanted to get back to you with some information about our plans. In the case of Red Alert 3 (and all PC titles coming out of EA), we will use SecuROM – the same copy protection that the EALA RTS group has used on our last three titles. This time around, however, the copy protection will be configured to be more lenient than we've supported in the past.

I know this can be somewhat of a polarizing topic, and I thought it would be best to open the lines of communication with some facts:

- We will authenticate your game online when you install and launch it the first time.

- We will never re-authenticate an installation online after the first launch. In other words, no reaching out to a central server post-install to see if you’re “allowed” to play.

- You will be able to install and play on up to five computers.

- This system means you don't have to play with the disc in your computer. Personally, I think this is a huge improvement over our previous copy protection requirements, which have always required a disk to play.

- Life happens. I know it’s unlikely, but for those unlucky few who install the game and have their machines nuked (virus, OS reinstall, major hardware upgrade, etc.) five times, EA Customer Service will be on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support.

-You can, of course, play offline without impediment or penalty.

Red Alert 3 is shaping up to be a world-class RTS game that will give you many hours of enjoyment. I think it would be a shame if people decided to not play a great game simply because it came with DRM, but I understand that this is a very personal decision for many of you and I respect that. As you might imagine, I’m a lot less respectful of those people who take the position that they will illegally download a game simply because it has DRM.

Either way, we’ re very proud of the hard work our team has put into this game and we hope you will all enjoy it when it launches.

Football Manager 2009 Preview

First there was text commentary. Then a top-down 2D engine. Now, finally, after years of patient waiting, Football Manager's match engine is entering the third dimension on PC and Mac. Utilising motion capture footage borrowed from SEGA Japan's Virtua Striker, Football Manager 2009 is promising to deliver the visual realism that its stunningly detailed match engine so richly deserves.

The build that we see during the game's London launch party is still very much a work in progress, with just over 40 of the promised 100 player animations in place. The footage shows an isometric 3D viewpoint that encompasses the entire pitch, allowing for the easy monitoring of your team's performance (as with the 2D match engine). Purists will still be able to play FM09 entirely from the 2D match engine viewpoint, while developer Sports Interactive is also considering retaining the original text-only commentary option.

"We've been working on it [the 3D match engine] for about three years and we've had a couple of attempts that we abandoned," Sports Interactive MD Miles Jacobson reveals. "Late last year we were confident that we could do a 3D match engine properly. But even up until a couple of months ago we didn't know we were going to be delivering it this year."

'Football Manager 2009' Screenshot 1

The new 3D match engine will contain over 100 unique animations.

Other new 3D match engine features include a time bar borrowed from Football Manager Live, allowing you to rewind the action. There'll also be a new TV-style view that provides full-screen options and a customisable selection of widgets such as player ratings.

While the action will be viewed from a fixed distance (zooming in and player cams won't feature) Jacobson promises that SI is attempting to cram as much detail as possible into the new match engine. "We're trying to make sure that each player will have the correct skin and hair colour," he says. "We have eighteen different skin tones to make it as accurate as possible. We're trying to get a really good level of detail right down to players raising their hands for offsides and animated referees and linesmen too."

Jacobson also says that players will have preferred moves to help distinguish a tricky step-over-loving winger from a towering central defensive bruiser. While preferred move animations will be generic rather than modelled on the playing style of each player's real-life counterpart, the scope for advancements of the 3D match engine over the coming years is clear to see.

As well as the revolutionary match engine, FM09 will also possess plenty of evolutionary features. Assistant managers will provide exhaustive feedback about how you and the opposition are playing, a feature that hardcore players will no doubt snort at, but one which could prove invaluable to newcomers.

'Football Manager 2009' Screenshot 2

The 3D action will be viewable from five different camera angles.

"This [the assistant manager option] is something that has consistently come up when we've spoken to new users," explained Jacobson. "During a match your assistant manager will give you feedback in two specific areas: a player's motivation during a match and general feedback on whether your tactics are working, how the opposition is exploiting your tactics and what you can be doing to exploit their tactics."

Media interaction is also being revamped, with press conferences taking place before and after each match and when starting out at a new club. Press conferences will involve journalists firing questions at you, to which you'll respond from a selection of five replies. However, make too many unsubstantiated statements and those pesky journos will quickly and gleefully remind you of your predications should you fail to deliver on your promises. If it all gets too much, you'll even be able to throw a hissy fit and storm out.

Other new features that Jacobson reveals include the ability to ask your players to stay back after training to learn special moves, and bolstered board-confidence feedback that will keep you better informed of how you're progressing. All of the fifty-one countries' leagues are receiving an update with the player and staff database set to tip the 350,000 mark for the first time, while the transfer system is also being rewritten in the hope that the game's transfer activity will more realistically reflect what's happening in the real world.

'Football Manager 2009' Screenshot 3

The TV mode will let you watch matches from a full screen viewpoint.

Finally, good news for female fans as for the first time you'll no longer have to pretend to be a boy (unless you really want to), thanks to a new female manager option. Or should that be manageress?

Before finishing his presentation, Jacobson talks about FM09 on PSP, which will ship simultaneously with the PC and Mac versions. "For the PSP version you can now have multiple leagues," he reveals. "You start off with one country's leagues and you can then add up to three top-tiered European divisions on top, so you can move around your career just like you can in the PC game." The biggest reveal, however, is the announcement that FM09 on PSP will feature the 2D match engine, with the action viewable from both the full pitch and a more zoomed-in perspective. Sadly, SI has no plans to release FM09 on PS3 or Xbox 360, citing the need to improve the control interface before having another crack at a home console version.

With more reveals promised over the coming months via a series of podcasts and with a demo in the works (set for public release a few weeks before FM09 ships), there's more than a little to be getting excited about. After one too many years of evolutionary shuffles, it seems the Football Manager series could be about to take that all important revolutionary leap we've all been waiting for.
