Nintendo Unveils DS Fashion Sim

Girls Mode lets you live out your wildest dress-up fantasies. By Kevin Gifford, 09/10/2008
Whether justified or not, Nintendo has developed a solid reputation for targeting its games and consoles squarely toward the "casual" audience. Their latest new title announcement is unlikely to sway that opinion much -- it's a "fashion simulation" for female gamers, much in the style of Koei's rapidly-upcoming POP CUTIE!

Called My Very Own Fashion: Girls Mode, the Nintendo DS title (currently announced for Japan only) puts you in the silk camisole and thigh-high cowboy boots of a retailer at a cool new clothing boutique, helping customers piece together the perfect outfit for their dates or ice-cream socials or whatever. There are over 10,000 fashion items in the game from 16 different categories, ranging from hats and skirts to coats and other accessories; you'll have to make your recommendations based off current seasonal fashions (your DS calendar plays a role here), your customer's likes and dislikes, and how much money she's willing to spend. Get it right, and she'll buy more from you and tell all her friends; fumble it by showing her too much boring stuff, and she'll take her business elsewhere. (Basically POP CUTIE!, in other words, except the clothing and models are in full 3D with this game.)

Your little fashionista begins the game as a clerk at a small shop called Lumina. If you do well enough with your outfits, though, your boss will put you in charge of a new location, where you'll get to change the decor and background music to your tastes. Keep up the good work, and you'll start to get coverage in fashion magazines and even earn a chance to participate in the city fashion contest, earning rare items if you win. Wahey. Even in DS games for girls, hard work gets you everywhere. The game also features Wi-Fi support, though how it'll use it is still unknown.

Girls Mode is due out on Japanese DSes October 23 for 4800 yen. No overseas release has been announced, though diehard Nintendo fanboys may prefer to pretend this entire news article never existed in the first place.

Nintendo Working On 'Better' Wii Storage Solution than HDD

Also: New Zelda reconfirmed to be in the works, and Animal Crossing is so not casual.

Week after week, Nintendo releases new WiiWare and Virtual Console games, and the storage capacity in Wiis the world over continues to shrink. So how do they intend to solve this issue for Virtual Console gluttons? Not with a hard drive, apparently, as Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says the company is working on a solution that's even better.

Fils-Aime, along with Shigeru Miyamoto, were recently interviewed by Club Nintendo, the official Nintendo magazine for Latin America. But thanks to a translation by GoNintendo (via Kotaku), we know some of the important bits that the two of them had to say. When asked about the lack of storage space on the Wii, Miyamoto apparently said that an announcement should be expected soon, as Nintendo is currently working on a solution. Fils-Aime added that it won't be a hard drive, as what they're working on will be a "better solution."

What could possibly be a better solution than a simple hard drive? Your guesses are as good as ours, but the obvious (and probably easiest) possibility might simply be to allow users to plug in any external hard drive they want through the Wii's USB ports.

A few more interesting tidbits from the interview: When asked about incorporating the Wii MotionPlus remote add-on in a future Zelda game, Miyamoto didn't comment specifically about the use of the add-on, but did reconfirm that new Zelda and Pikmin titles are currently in development. Miyamoto also said not to expect any more Wii peripherals, as Nintendo feels they've released enough already.

Fils-Aime, meanwhile, said he doesn't consider Animal Crossing: City Folk to be a casual game, and that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS is being made as a game for the hardcore audience. And when asked about another DS redesign, Fils-Aime said they only consider console redesigns when sales go down, not when they continue to stay up.

So at this pace, what, that means in like another 10 years?

Team Ninja Working on Three New Action Games

Global titles to be announced at Tokyo Game Show

US, September 3, 2008 - Team Ninja may have lost Tomonobu Itagaki, but it's still cranking away at the games. In fact, the studio is gearing up to show three new titles at next month's Tokyo Game Show.

Tecmo president Yasuharu Kakihara revealed this little bit at a press conference in Tokyo today in which Tecmo introduced its upcoming lineup for the year.

Opening up the conference, Kakihara said that Team Ninja, now working under Jin Hasegawa since July 1, is working on three action games targeting the worldwide market. These will be formally unveiled at TGS.

Platforms were not announced for these projects, but with the bold and unbound Itagaki as the voice of the team, many of Team Ninja's work-in-progress titles were spoken of in codename form before his departure-- it is unknown what the status of "Dead or Alive: Code Cronus" or "Project Progressive" is, but either title might be amongst those unveiled at TGS. In the past few years, the team has focused on the Xbox 360, but the Ninja Gaiden series has also spun off onto the PlayStation 3 (in the form of a port of NG1) and Nintendo DS (Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword) and these titles could be spread across any of these three platforms or beyond.

Kakihara did not share specifics beyond this general announcement. TGS just a month away, though, so the wait for more details won't be too long.
